The IZOD IndyCar World Championship Presented by Honda, a legendary IndyCar championship that was held every year at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway from 1996-2000, came back to life in 2011, and we saw some pretty tight competition this year as racers competed for dominance of the indy racing league. Perhaps too tight of competition though, and in the race today, October 16th 2011, ended in a horrific 15 car crash, ultimately leading to the death of racer Dan Wheldon at the young age of 33.
Despite the implementation of the innovated SAFER barrier system, This terrible travesty could not be prevented, causing many to question whether the safety measures of motorsports are effective enough.
Dan Wheldon, the winner of the 2005 IndyCar Series Championship (also winner of the Indianapolis 500 in 2005 and 2011), lived his entire life for racing, his aspirations evident even at the age of four. We have the very best of wishes for his family and friends, who have suffered the most from his death.
